Darron Gibson on the verge of Sunderland move

Darron Gibson appears to be on the verge of a move which could revitalize his career, with news he is set to sign for Sunderland.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder hasn't made a Premier League appearance this season under Ronald Koeman and hasn't been involved with the Ireland squad since their pre-European Championship friendlies last May.

Gibson has struggled for game time since making the move to Everton back in 2012, with injuries hampering his chances at becoming a regular in the first team. Gibson has only made one appearance for the Toffees, an EFL Cup tie against Yeovil.

Sunderland boss David Moyes is also looking to further raid his former squad, with reports linking him with Bryan Oviedo. That would bring the number to six, the amount of players who had played under him previously at Everton - Steven Pienaar, Victor Anichebe and Joleon Lescott being the other three.

Jack Rodwell also previously played at Everton before making the move to Manchester City. He's currently in the Sunderland squad.

The movement comes ahead of the transfer deadline on Tuesday evening and following the departure of defender Patrick van Aanholt.

Sunderland confirmed on Monday morning that the Dutchman would be leaving the club for fellow Premier League strugglers, Crystal Palace. The Eagles, managed by former Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce, were keen to bring in the full-back. The deal is worth €16.4m to the club.
