Boston Red Sox were knocked out of the American League Divisional Series loss to the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians won 4-3 in Boston's Fenway Park on Monday night to win the best-of-five series, 3-0. The Indians' victory also marked the end of the career of David Ortiz, affectionately known as 'Big Papi'.

Ortiz was the only Red Sox link between their three World Series titles of the 21st century. In 2004, the Red Sox overcame the 'Curse of the Bambino' to win their first World Series since 1918.

The 40-year-old went on to win two further World Series titles in 2007 and 2013. In a city that has seen players like Larry Bird and Bill Walton play for the Boston Celtics, Ortiz is widely seen as Boston's most popular athlete.

Despite being known for his time with the Fenway Park team, Ortiz began his career in 1997 with the Minnesota Twins. He joined the Red Sox ahead of the 2003 season.

Monday's game gave the Red Sox fans a chance to say goodbye to the future Hall of Famer on home soil. Tributes were paid to the Dominican during the Red Sox final regular season game of the year.

As a designated hitter, Ortiz has scored more home runs than any other designated hitter in the history of professional baseball. He is 18th on the all-time list with 541 home runs.

Only 28 players have scored more than 500 home runs in Major League Baseball history.
