David Power steps down as Wexford football manager

Wexford footballer manager David Power has called time on his time in charge of the county team this afternoon.

Power, who was at the helm of the senior, junior and U21 football teams, steps down from his position with immediate effect.

He was in charge of the 2011 minor team who claimed success in the All-Ireland. Wexford were knocked out of the Leinster championship by Kildare and were beaten in the All-Ireland qualifiers by Fermanagh.

"I feel that I can no longer devote the necessary time and energy required for these positions and with that in mind I have decided to step aside," he said in a statement.

"I would like to sincerely thank the Wexford GAA board for giving me the opportunity to manage their senior team, and also the junior and U-21 sides.

"It has been a tremendous honour for me to be involved with the three teams and I enjoyed every minute of the job."

He went on to thank the players and staff wishing them the best in their future careers.

"My back-room team put in tremendous amounts of work and showed immense dedication and they were of huge assistance all the way through.

"I would like to acknowledge the help of John Power and Michael Walsh - (Selectors), Tim McCarthy and Mattie Forde- (Coaches), Alan O'Connor and Peak Fitness (Strength & Conditioning), Adrian Walsh (Goalkeeper Coach), Jim Murphy (Team Administrator), Adrian Shiel (Kit manager) Noel Holohan, Louise Fanning and Ross Elemes ( Video Analysis), Louise Mulhare (Physio) Darius Fourie (Masseur). Dr Kevin Byrne, (Team Doctor) and Nichola Forest (Nutritionist) also played huge roles for us."

Power said that he felt that "significant progress has been made in the last two years" with the team and said he had no doubt "the rewards and dividends will clearly be seen in future years".
