The biggest racing festival of the year is fast approaching and the excitement is certainly building.

The first race of the Cheltenham Festival is the grade one Supreme Novices Hurdle which will take place at 1.30pm.

Racing expert Derek Thompson spoke briefly to Newstalk Breakfast on Tuesday morning as he took a look ahead to an action packed day.

The feature race of the day is the Stan James Champion Hurdle which sees JP McManus' Yanworth top the betting. Thompson believes the winner will come from the McManus yard as he has three horses in the race.

“I really like Buveur D'air. I think he has a real chance. I know he’s coming back from fences but the brilliant Noel Fehily is on board,” he said.

“I’m a great Buveur D'air man. Nicky Henderson has won the race five years and he has three runners this year including My Tent Or Yours. David Pipe's Bumper winner Moon Racer has a good chance at high odds. Its one of those races where you have got stacks of contenders. I fancy Buveur Dair. I think he will take the world of beating.”

Yanworth heads the betting at 5-2. Beveur Dair is around 11-2. Moon racer 9-1 and My Tent Or Yours at around 16-1.
