Derry City say Ryan McBride will "be remembered as one of the greats"

Derry City have released a statement, following the untimely passing of their captain Ryan McBride.

The 27-year-old, passed away on Sunday, a day after playing for Derry in their 4-0 win over Drogheda United on Saturday. He had played in all four of Derry's games this season, and scored the winner against Shamrock Rovers in their 1-0 win in Tallaght earlier this month.

McBride's death is the third tragedy to fall upon the club in just over the past 12 months. This day last year, Derry player Josh Daniels lost numerous family members including his mother and sister in the Buncrana pier tragedy.

In February last year, former Derry striker Mark Farren died of a brain tumour. He was the club's record goal scorer, and died aged only 33.

On Monday morning, Derry released a statement, calling the defender "a great captain", adding he will be "remembered as one of the greats of Derry City Football Club".

The club added that they will find a way to celebrate his life, once "we have got past the initial shock and have had the proper space to grieve".

"We will remember his civility and humility off the field, his commitment and passion on it and the deep love he carried in his heart for Derry City Football Club."
