Di Matteo named as Aston Villa manager with Steve Clarke as his assistant, according to reports

Roberto di Matteo has been named as the new manager of Aston Villa with Steve Clarke as his assistant, according to reports.

Di Matteo has not worked in England since being relieved of his duties having won the Champions League with Chelsea and Steve Clarke has been out of work since being sacked by Reading in December of last year.

Villa's new owner, Dr Tony Xia, is sure that Di Matteo will help bring the club back from obcurity in the midlands and has ensured fans that there will be plenty of funding for new players.

Villa were relegated from the Premier League last year with one of the worst performances in the history of the competition. They sacked Tim Sherwood in October before turning to Remi Garde, who left the club in March of this year.

There has been plenty of drama within the squad in recent times with Gabby Agbonlohor and Joleon Lescott making headlines for all the wrong reasons during a season to forget for the Birmingham club. Agbonlahor relinqushed the captain's armband when caretaker manager Eric Black declared him unfit to play at a top level and Lescott enfuriated fans when he posted a photo of an expensive care after a Villa loss.

Clarke and Di Matteo have never been part of a coaching setup together but were Chelsea teammates for two years from 1996 to 1998.

The 46-year-old Swiss-born manager managed Schalke in his last role but resigned in May of 2015 when they failed to reach the Champions League, finishing sixth in the Bundesliga.

According to another report, Di Matteo is set to bring in a fitness coach who is referred to as "The Sheik of the Muscles" in order to get the utmost out of the current Villa squad.
