Does John Giles believe Arsenal can go through the season with just one recognised striker?

John Giles believes the one major concern for Arsenal is the striker situation given the lack of depth in that position.

Olivier Giroud, who scored a Champions League hat-trick against Olympiakos last night, is the only recognised striker in the squad, although Theo Walcott - who John has doubts about - has been used an an alternative.

"I think the problem for them is the striking situation," John told Off The Ball.

"I think [Arsene] Wenger has come under criticism - and quite rightly - for having the one recognised striker. You're not going to go through the whole season without getting injuries. Giroud has done well for them. But when Manchester United were at their best under Ferguson, they actually had four strikers. So, if Giroud is injured, who's going to go in for them. They've got [Joel] Campbell who came in, Walcott has played up front. But they're not real recognised strikers that you would need for all the matches you have to play."

But John, who thinks Mesut Ozil would be better on the left or right wing, also thought last night's result will have a positive impact when others teams are being inconsistent.

"Certainly from Arsenal's point of view, they're going into the Christmas period now having qualified for the Champions League again, when they could have been out. It's certainly good for them and nobody knows what's going to happen in future. But they're there or thereabouts," said John.
