Dominic Casey named in World Rowing's Coach of the Year shortlist

Dominic Casey, the coach of Olympic silver medallists Gary and Paul O'Donovan has been nominated for Coach of the Year at the 2016 World Rowing Awards.

Casey, who coaches Skibbereen Rowing Club coached the brothers to Olympic silver in Rio, and helped Paul to a World Championship gold in The Netherlands, both in the space of two weeks in August.

The only Irish person nominated for an award in any category, Casey joins coaches from France, New Zealand, Great Britain, Australia and Croatia in the running for the Coach of the Year award.

Speaking last month at an event in Dublin, Gary admitted he and his younger brother owed a lot to Casey and his coaching.

"His passion is phenomenal. He’ll put as much time and effort into the 14-year-old kid who’s starting at the weekend that he would into us. He will never turn down an athlete. If an athlete wants to train, he’ll welcome them and he’ll open the doors and he’ll give them every opportunity that he possibly can."

France's Pierre Houin and Jeremie Azou, the duo who defeated the O'Donovan brothers to gold in Brazil are nominated for the World Rowing Male Crew of the Year.

The winners will be announced on December 2nd, with an Awards Ceremony in January in Vancouver, Canada.
