Duncan Ferguson is influencing Romelu Lukaku in Golden Boot quest

Romelu Lukaku and Duncan Ferguson are not like-for-like strikers, but the Belgian striker has praised his elder Scottish counterpart for helping in his development in the Premier League.

Lukaku scored last weekend in Everton's 2-0 win over Sunderland. His 17 Premier League goals this season has the striker joining Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez at the top of the goal-scoring charts. The Belgian striker also equalled Ferguson's Premier League record of 60 goals for the team. No player has scored more league goals for the team in the Premier League-era.

Ferguson was a rampaging striker in the 1990s for Everton. The Scottish striker was stereotypical target man of the 1990s in three separate spells at Everton, including a loan deal, before his permanent transfer.  The 45-year-old scored 72 goals for the club.

Under Ronald Koeman, Ferguson now works as a coach at the club, and Lukaku has found the former striker's influence to help him leap up the goal-scoring table this year.

"Duncan spoke to me in a way to keep me sharp and test me," told the Daily Mail after the win over Sunderland. "Football is like that. You have to test yourself and put yourself through these moments if you want to improve."

"He has been winding me up but he knows it is for a good cause. He wants me to help the teammates to win and I want to win. I am a winner and I want to win as much as I can and score as many goals as I can. I'm happy. The Golden Boot is a big ambition."

Lukaku's season at Everton has been regularly entwined with reports of him leaving the club at the end of the season. If Everton's record signing continues to keep scoring, he may be on the move, sooner that later.
