Earls out for Munster but injury not as bad as first feared

Keith Earls has been ruled out of Munster's Champions Cup quarter final against Toulon, but the winger's knee injury is not as bad as first feared.

Earls suffered the injury in last week's Grand Slam victory against England at Twickenhem, with initial fears he could be sidelined for months rather than weeks.

However, while the province have confirmed ligament injury for Earls, he does look likely to be back in action before the end of the season.

"With Munster’s Grand Slam winning contingent of Peter O’Mahony, CJ Stander, Conor Murray and the injured Keith Earls all returning to the province next week, the news on Earls is not as bad as first feared,” a statement from the province confirmed.

"It has been confirmed that the winger, who sustained knee ligament damage in Twickenham last Saturday, will not be available for approximately six weeks, ruling him out of the Champions Cup quarter final against Toulon on 31 March," they added.

It's the latest in a growing injury list for the province.

Earlier this week, they revealed that Tyler Bleyendaal and Duncan Williams will both miss the rest of the season.

Bleyendaal has had surgery on his on-going neck problems, while a facial injury sustained in training will keep Williams sidelined for the rest of the campaign.

On top of that, Chris Cloete, Chris Farrell and Jaco Taute are all long-term absentees.

Cloete is nursing a broken arm, while Farrell and Taute are both sidelined with serious knee injuries.
