"He played plenty of football with Liverpool last season and we’re looking forward to seeing him to continue to grow now with us, he’s a huge prospect."
Those were the words of Bournemouth's chief executive Neill Blake when Jordon Ibe signed for the club from Liverpool. The 21-year-old was signed on a four-year contract for a club record £15million transfer fee.
Ibe has played 16 times for Eddie Howe's team in his debut season at the Vitality Stadium. The midfielder was part of the team who lost 3-0 to Millwall in the FA Cup last weekend.
After the loss, Howe singled out Ibe for his performances since joining the club last summer.
"He hasn’t been a regular in the team and that will be a disappointment for him and for us." Howe told The Guardian after the loss, in which Bournemouth made 11 changes from their previous match. "I still feel there’s a lot of potential in there, but obviously he’s got to fulfil that when he gets chances like today."
Bournemouth were one of three Premier League sides to lose to lower-league opposition, with the likes of Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Southampton facing replays against sides from lower-leagues.
The London native has yet to score for Bournemouth since joining. Howe's public comments could be taken either way by the England Under-21 international. He is now a marked man with a point to prove. Howe will hope his words will light a fire under Ibe and move on his career.
