Egypt book Africa Cup of Nations quarter final spot

Egypt have become the last team to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah scored in a 1-0 victory over Ghana - who had already reached the last eight.

But the result means Egypt go through as Group D winners above a Ghana side that finished runners up two years ago.

Salah found the net from a free kick in a match between two sides that have won 11 Africa Cup of Nations between them over the years (Egypt have won a record seven).

Egypt will now face fellow North African side Morocco in the quarter finals while Ghana face a DR Congo side that topped a Group C which featured the now eliminated reigning champions Ivory Coast.

Mali had slim hopes of progressing past Egypt with a win but they finished with a 1-1 draw against Uganda.

On a waterlogged pitch, Farouk Miya gave Uganda the lead with 20 minutes to go.

But Mali responded quickly through a Yves Bissouma free kick.

Tonight's action brings an end to the group stage with the quarter finals kicking off on January 28th.

Burkina Faso will take on Tunisia, while 2002 finalists Senegal and Cameroon go head to head in the evening game that day.

The following day sees the quarter final matches involving Ghana and Egypt.
