End of an era as Shay Given retires from Ireland duty

Shay Given has announced his international retirement.

Ireland's most-capped goalkeeper has confirmed that he is retiring from the Irish squad in order to focus on continuing his club career.

The 40-year-old traveled with the squad to Euro2016 but was an unused sub throughout the campaign in France, with West Ham's Darren Randolph starting.

Given, who still has one year remaining on his contract with Stoke City, won 134 caps during an iconic 20-year Ireland career after making his debut as a 19-year-old in March 1996.

He was part of three major tournament squads for Ireland, including the 2002 World Cup, Euro 2012 and 2016.

The Donegal native had previously retired from Ireland duty after Euro 2012 before making himself available again the following year.
