"Especially the Neville brothers" - Jurgen Klopp takes aim at pundit duo over criticism of Karius

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's launched a stunning attack on Gary and Phil Neville in his news conference this lunchtime.

Defeat at Bournemouth, followed by a draw with West Ham has left Liverpool six points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

But goalkeeper Loris Karius is the man who has come in for particular criticism from the former Manchester United players.

Gary Neville was the first to criticise the goalkeeper after the Bournemouth game, before brother Phil echoed that on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night following the West Ham game and Karius' criticism of Gary in the meantime.

Klopp isn't taking the Neville brothers' criticism of his goalkeeper.

"My job is to protect the players as much as we can, but I can’t do that when they’re on the pitch," said Klopp at the Liverpool press conference ahead of the midweek Middlesbrough clash.

"I’m not surprised about it. In my first press conference I spoke about English media, and the pundits, the former players, forgot completely how it felt when they get criticised.

"Especially the Neville brothers, the one who was a manager, he should know. He showed he struggled with a job to judge players - why do we let them talk about players on television?

"He’s not interested in helping a Liverpool player. I don’t listen to them. Carra doesn’t speak too much about United players, and the Neville brothers don’t care much about Liverpool. Tell him I’m not on Twitter. If he wants me, Twitter doesn’t help."

The remark about Gary Neville's brief time at Valencia was a point made by former Ireland defender Paddy Mulligan on Newstalk.com.

He said: "All you need to know about Gary Neville is to say one word: Valencia! He had a nightmare there and now he's pontificating on Sky...you've got some nerve as far as I'm concerned to go on television and criticise anybody or any club, be it Man United, Liverpool."
