Ex-GPA co-founder highlights the most significant aspect of the GPA-GAA deal

Former Gaelic Players Association founding member and commercial director Donal O'Neill says the 15% of net commercial revenue that the GPA will receive from the GAA in their new deal is of huge significance.

On Monday the players' body and the GAA announced that they had agreed a new €6.2 million deal to help players annually.

The GPA will also be given €2.5 million or 15% of net Central Commercial revenue (whichever is higher) in all three years for the day-to-day running of the Association.

O'Neill told Off The Ball that it puts the GPA in the "driving seat" and is a good deal.

"The one thing I had always wanted to see and was adamant that would be essential to the longevity and the clout that the GPA would carry was a deal that enshrined a percentage of commercial income," he said, adding that he feels that it's a "fantastic principle to establish" and that other aspect of the deal are secondary to that aspect.

He also feels that 15% is a "fair number" and "good starting point".

"It's just a deal very well done," he said.
