Fergal O'Donnell steps down as Roscommon joint-manager

After less than a year in charge, Fergal O'Donnell has stepped down a Roscommon's joint-manager.

The former player has stepped aside from the role he held with Kevin McStay, citing a "concerted effort has been made (outside of management and players) to undermine and disparage us."

Selectors Stephen Bohan and David Casey have also stepped aside with O'Donnell. All three men committed to three-year deals last October.

O'Donnell previously managed Roscommon to a Connacht title. In 2010, he led his native country to a shock defeat of Sligo in Castlebar. Before he took charge of the seniors, he led the minor team to All-Ireland glory in 2006.

The O'Donnell-McStay reign began in excellent circumstances at the start of the year when Roscommon reached the semi-finals of the Allianz League, despite being heavy favourites to be relegated from Division 1.

In the Connacht Championship, despite a massive scare against New York, the team reached the Connach Final. A defeat to Galway in the Final Replay saw the team enter the qualifiers, but they lost at the first hurdle to Clare.

In the statement, O'Donnell confirmed the "decision to depart now is made in the best interests of Roscommon football and with a view to removing the inevitable distraction that would result from a potentially divisive contest for the position of manager between myself and Kevin".

Kevin McStay has stayed with the team and will be expected to take the sole reigns of the team ahead of the 2017 season.
