Five star Cork City force Wexford Youths into promotion-relegation playoff

Cork City have put aside the disappointment of not being able to take the League of Ireland title race into another round of games by thrashing Wexford Youths 5-0 at Turner's Cross.

John Caulfield's side challenged Dundalk for the title but the Louth club secured their third Premier Division triumph in a row on Sunday night.

Two goals from Chiedozie Ogbene put Cork 2-0 up within 10 minutes.

The prolific Sean Maguire then made it 3-0 after 32 minutes, before Conor McCarthy added a fourth six minutes later to give the second placed side a commanding half-time advantage.

Gavan Holohan added goal No 5 on 57 minutes.

Ogbene had a chance for a hat-trick and to make it 6-0 from the penalty spot but saw his effort saved.

The 5-0 defeat for Wexford means they will have to face playing in this year's promotion/relegation play-off against either Cobh Ramblers or Drogheda United as a win tonight was necessary to avoid that fate.

After their final league fixture, Cork take on Dundalk in the FAI Cup final on November 6th at Aviva Stadium.
