The British Masters begins on Thursday morning at The Grove. Shane Lowry, Graeme McDowell, Paul McGinley and Michael Hoey are all taking part in the event.

In a bid, to entice fans to the sport, the final hole at The Grove was turned into a par-3 hole for a made-for-television knockout tournament. The 18th will return to a par-5, 518-yard hole for the tournament.

Eight players, including Lowry and the tournament host Luke Donald took part in the event, which saw the hole surrounded by lights. Commentators speaking to the players and fireworks were also part of the event.

The eight players played four quarter-finals, followed by two semi-finals and the final. The winner of the Hero Challenge received a £10,000 cheque to be donated to charity.

Players won their matches, by scoring a lower score that their opponent. If both players scored the same, the closer to the hole advanced.

“It was amazing to see the crowds and everyone enjoying it", the winner Alex Levy said. "Golf needs something like this and it is a great idea. We did the Fastest Par Five earlier this year which was great fun and this was amazing too. I really enjoyed it, and of course it is always nice to win."

Andrew Johnson was knocked out by Lowry, in the quarter-finals. Depsite the early exit, he certainly enjoyed the experience.
