Florentino Perez may be set to step down as Real Madrid President

Florentino Perez's tenure as Real Madrid President may be about to come to an end for a second time.

The man who introduced the Galacticos era to Madrid in the early 2000s returned to the Bernabeu in 2009 for a second tenure as President. In that time, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and many other stars joined the club but Barcelona have remained dominant in the league.

According to Sport, Perez may decide to call elections this summer, despite having another year to run in his tenure. They claim the 68-year-old was considering to leave the club at the end of the season and that has been cemented since Real lost the Madrid Derby to Atletico last weekend in the Bernabeu.

Perez's second tenure in charge of the club has led to one La Liga title, one Champions League win and two Copa del Rey triumphs. Those wins have come when arch-rivals Barcelona have never been as dominant in both Spain and Europe.

After Rafael Benitez's departure from the club in January, Perez has borne the brunt of criticism from Madrid's fans as club legend and new coach Zinedine Zidane remains untouchable.

Should Perez leave the club in the summer, new elections would be called which may lead to a new way of recruiting players to the Bernabeu.
