Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather don't compete in the same sport, but that hasn't stopped repeated and consistent rumours that the two could step into the ring together.
After becoming the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts in two weight divisions concurrently, McGregor was stripped of his featherweight title at the end of November, although the organisation officially said the Dubliner had "relinquished" his belt.
The move on the part of the UFC may have increased the reported tensions between Dana White and McGregor, and although the UFC President has frequently gone on record to say they have a great relationship, there's no denying that the Irishman has been calling more shots since the falling out that saw him miss the UFC 200 card.
After Jose Aldo was named the featherweight champion in McGregor's stead, the Irishman once again dominated the headlines by getting himself a boxing licence in California, leading many to speculate that the Mayweather fight was around the corner.
However, speaking this week to Fight Hype, the undefeated boxer said that there was no chance of it happening, and McGregor was simply trying to keep himself relevant while he takes time away from the sport.
"Man, I don't fight in California. What did he get a license in California for? He's blowing smoke up everybody's a**," said Mayweather.
"He don't really wanna fight because I went to his boss. He don't want to fight, he's just doing that to keep his name alive, to stay relevant. He's doing that to build his followers. He's smart."
The boxer won't be headed to California for the bout and Las Vegas, where Mayweather fights, is unlikely to be a venue that the Irishman would compete in for the foreseeable future, as he looks set to take the Nevada State Athletic Commission to court over the fine he was issued after a melee erupted at the UFC 202 press conference.
Despite that, Mayweather took to Instagram on Wednesday night to taunt the Irishman over his loss to Nate Diaz, offering a reward to the person who provided the best caption for his video.

With both fighters enjoying plenty of headlines and a bit more of the spotlight without ever having to trade blows, this one looks set to rumble on for a while yet.
