Former Derry City star Michael Duffy joins Dundalk

League of Ireland champions Dundalk have announced the signing of Michael Duffy from Celtic.

Duffy returns to the SSE Airtricity League after a two-year spell in Scotland. He joined Celtic in 2015 from his hometown team Derry City.

The 22-year-old failed to make an appearance for the Glasgow giants, but he did enjoy loan spells at Alloa Athletic last season, and with Dundee this season in the Scottish Premiership. His last appearance for Dundee came last month the a Scottish FA Cup defeat to St. Mirren.

"I’m buzzing to join Dundalk. I’m just happy now that it has finally got done. I enjoyed my two years in Scotland. I have some good memories of it; I played in some big games and made a good lot of friends. It just didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, but I still enjoyed it," Duffy told Dundalk's website.

"I’ve seen how well Stephen and Dundalk have been doing over the past few years. Speaking to him and listening to his plans with me, I really wanted to come here. I followed Dundalk and watched all their games in Europe and saw how well they were doing. They were very unlucky not to qualify from the group stages, so I’m hoping they can go on the same run again this year."

An FAI Cup winner with Derry City, Duffy has played underage football for both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. He was called up to Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland squad last August, but has yet to play for the senior team.

The Derry native will link up with his new Dundalk teammates in Spain on Wednesday afternoon where Stephen Kenny's side are continuing their pre-season preparations.
