Former Ireland coach Phil Simmons fired by the West Indies

Former Ireland head coach Phil Simmons has been sacked as the coach of the West Indies.

The 53-year-old Trinidad native left his role with Ireland after last year's Cricket World Cup, and has lasted less than a year-and-a-half with the West Indies. Simmons was informed of the decision on Tuesday, with the West Indies Cricket Board citing "differences in culture and strategic approach" as their reasoning.

Simmons' fate was sealed on Saturday at a board meeting, but was only made public after reports were leaked on the Caribbean islands.

"In recent times, based on the public pronouncements of the coach and the approach internally, we have identified differences in culture and strategic approach. The WICB would therefore like to thank the coach for his contribution and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

The Senior Team is preparing for its upcoming assignments against Pakistan in the UAE. The Team will be headed by Manager Joel Garner, coaches Henderson Springer and Roddy Estwick."

Simmons' eight-year spell with Ireland from 2007 to 2015 included two World Cup appearances, where the team recorded wins over England, the West Indies and Zimbabwe. In the T20 World Cup, Ireland also won games against Bangladesh and other associate nations.
