Formula 1 drivers call for widespread changes to the governance of the sport

The Grand Prix Drivers's Association has called on the governance of Formula 1 to be changed as "obsolete and ill-structured".

The letter when was written on behalf of all Formula 1 drivers was signed by former the former World Champion-duo of Jensen Button and Sebastian Vettel along with the association's president Alexander Wurz.

“The drivers have come to the conclusion that the decision-making process in the sport is obsolete and ill-structured and prevents progress being made. Indeed, it can sometimes lead to just the opposite, a gridlock. This reflects negatively on our sport, prevents it being fit for the next generation of fans and compromises further global growth.”

Formula 1 suffered an embarrassment at the Australian Grand Prix as the new qualification structure was deemed as a failure. The next Grand Prix, in Bahrain, will revert to the old qualification format.

The letter was released on Wednesday, hours before it was revealed that the sport's future on terrestrial television is in jeopardy. Sky Sports are to become the exclusive broadcast partners in Ireland and Britain from 2019 until 2024. Currently the sport is shown on Sky Sports with Channel 4 showing selected races live. Setanta Sports also shows races live in Ireland.
