France warned of terrorist attack on Olympic team at Rio Olympics

France has been apparently informed of a planned terrorist attack on its national team at the Olympics next month.

The leaked plans were revealed by the head of French military intelligence at a parliamentary commission in May, which was investigating the November attacks in Paris.

A spokesman from Brazil's institutional security cabinet told AFP that they had not received any information from the French authorities regarding this issue. He added that "the Brazilian intelligence agency (ABIN) was not officially informed either of this matter."

No other details on the claims were made available by the French authorities.

According to the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), there have been no terrorist attacks reported in five previous Olympic venues during the Olympics, six months prior to the Olympics, or during the same time period the previous year.

These locations include Japan 1972, Canada 1976, Soviet Union 1980, Yugoslavia 1984 and Australia 2000.

Some 85,000 members of the security forces - 47,000 policemen and 38,000 soldiers - will be mobilized to ensure the safety of 10,500 athletes as well as officials, journalists and tourists from around the world expected for the Games which run from August 5th-21st.
