Freak goal helps Newcastle return to the top of The Championship

Newcastle United returned to the top of The Championship after a 2-1 away to Brighton and Hove Albion in their top of the table clash.

Ayoze Perez scored in the final minutes of the game at the AmEx Stadium to record a famous win, after Glenn Murray gave the home side an early lead from the penalty spot.

Despite Perez's late heroics, the game will be remembered for Mohamed Diame's equalising goal in the 81st minute. From a Newcastle corner, Christian Atsu's mistimed shot hit off Daryl Murphy's foot before ricocheting off the outside of Diame's right boot and somehow looped over Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale.

What may turn out to be one of the most crucial goals in The Championship this season, will also be the flukiest scored the England's second-tier.

"We created a lot of good situations before Diame's goal, which was lucky", Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said after the win. "But the winning goal was calm and the composure of Ayoze was class."

Newcastle are now eight points clear of third-placed Huddersfield, having played a game more. With 12 games left for Benitez's side this season, only a late collapse looks like denying them of a return back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
