Wild scenes as Ligue 2 team earns promotion with last kick of the game

The French Ligue 2 ended in remarkable circumstances last night, with sixth-place Amiens scoring a goal in the 96th minute to clinch promotion for the first time in their history.

The top six teams were battling for Ligue 1 football on the final day, with just three points separating the sides.

Strasbourg secured the title following a 2-1 victory over Bourg-en-Bresse, while Emmanuel Bourgaud's 96th minute winner sent the Amiens contingent into raptures against Stade de Reims.

Speaking after the game, Amiens' club president Bernard Joannin said: "It is an extraordinary moment.

"I saw a fighting team again. At the start of the season, our ambition was to stay up - and now we are in Ligue 1. Football is a play every Friday night. We gave this evening an extraordinary drama."

Strasbourg now return to Ligue 1 for the first time since 2008, while Amiens are heading for the top flight of French football for the first time in their 116-year history.

Prior to Bourgraud's goal, it looked as though Troyes were set to take the second promotional spot, having rallied back from two goals down to beat Sochaux 3-2.

They now face the side who finish 18th in Ligue 1 in a play-off game.
