Jim Gavin stresses composure as Dublin edge Mayo

Jim Gavin was calmness personified at full time after Dublin came out of an enthralling clash with a committed Mayo side by a single point.

That All Ireland final win seals a first three in a row for Dublin since the 1920s and as he told our own Oisin Langan after the match, his side's composure ultimately proved key.

"When we were preparing for this game, we knew it was going to go down to a couple of plays," said the Dublin manager.

"Anytime we've played Mayo, it's been that way. They're such an accomplished side, very equally matched and I just thought our guys showed Dublin's composure in the last quarter when we went two down.

"The perception was the game might have been going away from us. The crowd was with them, they had momentum, yet we could go through the phases and get ourselves back in the game and out-score them 0-4 to 0-1 when it really mattered."

Dublin centre forward Ciaran Kilkenny had told Oisin that there weren't too many words from Gavin at half time and the manager himself outlined his own feelings during that pivotal point in the game as Mayo led by a point.

"The message at half time was, first of all, it's only a break in play. There's no medals handed out at half time, so it's keep going through our phases," said Gavin.

"I thought we showed good composure. Mayo brought a lot of physicality in that game which is their wont and I thought our guys responded well to that physical challenge and we stayed in the game and Jack [McCaffrey] went off and we just moved things around and I thought all the players that came in today - all six of them - played their part."
