Alcohol sales boomed in the UK during the past month with total sales spiking by 8.5%.

Sales of sparkling wines, including Prosecco and Champagne, fizzed. They were up by more than a third year-on-year.

Kantar Worldpanel reflects that "consumers have been keen to celebrate Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic golden summer."

It notes that sparkling wine sales were up by 36%, "as promotional events across a number of retailers successfully tapped into the nation’s celebratory mood."

This was well above the performance of other sectors as overall sales rose by 0.3% in the 12 weeks to September 11th.

The report noted that reductions from 'Tesco's summer Drinks Festival' played a significant role in the overall increase in sales.

Tesco remains that UK's most popular supermarket, with a market share of 28.1%.

Great Britain finished Rio 2016 with 27 gold medals, 23 silver medals, and 17 bronze medals.
