Garbine Muguruza beats Serena Williams to claim her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros

Garbine Muguruza has defeated the reigning French Open women's champion Serena Williams in straight sets to seal her first Grand Slam title - denying Williams her 22nd career Grand Slam victory.

Muguruza had played Williams four times in the past and only won once. That solitary victory came on the clay of Roland Garros in the second round of the 2014 French Open. The 22-year-old has improved her record against the American to two-for-two in Paris.

The firsts set was a gruelling encounter and with Serena Williams reportedly carrying a knee injury, this may not have been what she needed.

Muguruza started slower than her opponent but Muguruza took a 2-1 lead after three games. Williams predictably fought back and led at 5-4 before the Venezuelan-born fourth seed won the last three games to seal the first set leaving Williams with her work cut out for her.

The second set was just as complicated but once Muguruza won the first game, she never trailed despite the fact that Williams never lost sight of the match entirely until a lob that Muguruza herself thought was out gave her the match.

She would eventually win 7-5 6-4 for his first ever Grand Slam title and at just 22 years of age could be the first of many.
