England caretaker manager Gareth Southgate has said he had to step up and take the job after Sam Allardyce left the role earlier this week.
Allardyce left his job, after two months and only one game in charge, after he was the subject of an undercover investigation by The Telegraph which was published earlier this week.
Southgate, who is England's Under-21 manager, ruled himself out of contention for the job, before Allardyce was appointed, but felt the time was now right for him to temporarily take the biggest job in English football.
"It's obviously been a difficult situation for the FA, but it was important that there was some stability and continuity for everybody," Southgate told the BBC.
"From my point of view, it was important to step forward and give us the best possible chance to win these games.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge and I'm confident that we can get good results. We have an excellent group of players."
The former Middlesbrough manager, who played 57 times for his country in the 1990s and 2000s will take charge of the senior team for four games.
Southgate has been given the responsibility of leading England through their four remaining games this year. The four include a World Cup qualifier against Scotland, followed by a friendly at home to Spain in November. His first game will be at home to Malta next month.
