Gary Neville stands firm under considerable pressure to resign from Valencia

After nine games in La Liga, Gary Neville is still waiting on his first win as manager of Valencia.

Criticism reached palpable levels during the week when Valencia shipped a walloping 7-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and following yesterday's La Liga loss against Real Betis, many feel his resignation is inevitable.

Valencia are currently four points away from the relegation zone with former Valencia captain Santiago Canizares advising Neville to consider stepping down.

But the former Man United defender is standing firm against the negative comments.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Nevile said:

''It's clear that we are better than some of the teams we are playing against. Our last two league matches were not performances that deserved two defeats, but the reality is that they are two defeats and I am aware of the consequences when you don't get good results. What matters are results. There's no doubt that at times like this everyone needs to stay together.''

''Everyone suffers. It's just not going for us at the moment. I continue to work, I continue to have belief. Conversations with the owners are between me and the owners. We have to turn it round quickly, I understand that. It is hard to explain the defeat. It will turn."

Neville will draw much confidence from former Valencia midfielder Gaizka Mendieta who has said that the players must shoulder some of the responsibility for their downfall.

''It’s not only the results, but it’s the way the team is playing. It’s not only Gary who’s to blame here, I think it’s the players as well. When you see the way they play, they look like a team who are not prepared to compete at the level that they should. It’s more than just Gary here, there are a lot of things to look at for the club.''
