Gavin Henson signs for Newport Gwent Dragons

Former Wales rugby union international Gavin Henson has signed for Newport Gwent Dragons.

He will join the Welsh Guinness Pro 12 team in time for next season on a two year contract from Premiership side Bristol.

Henson won the last of his 33 Welsh caps in 2011 and also represented the British and Irish Lions in 2005.

"I have really enjoyed my time here at Bristol but when the opportunity came along to join the Dragons and return to Wales, I couldn't say no," he said.

"I still have loads to offer and I know what Kingsley wants from me. I'm especially looking forward to pitting myself against the current Welsh players, and hopefully becoming a catalyst and mentor for the tremendous talent that is in the Dragons squad."

Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones welcomed the upcoming addition to his squad.

"This is a hugely important signing and exactly what we need to complement our existing squad," he said.

"I am delighted that Gavin sees the potential within the Region and that he is excited about the prospect of assisting this group of backs with their development.

"Having worked with Gavin previously I am fully aware that he will bring critical experience on the field and inside the training environment.

The 35 year old previously played club rugby in Wales with Llanelli, Swansea and from 2003 regional side Ospreys before heading to English Premiership side Saracens in 2010, before a short spell at Cardiff Blues in the 2011-12 season.

He won the Six Nations Grand Slam with Wales in 2005, scoring a penalty and drop goal in the 32-20 win on the final weekend which sealed the fifth win from five.

He was also part of the 2008 Welsh team which won another Grand Slam.
