Ger Cafferkey calls for focus on county above club to help Mayo's 2016 All-Ireland bid

Mayo footballer Ger Cafferkey has released a statement calling for county success to be put before club in the upcoming weeks leading into this year's All-Ireland final.

Mayo face either Dublin or Kerry at Croke Park on September 18th after beating Tipperary in the semi-final on Sunday.

With club fixtures to be played in Mayo this week, Cafferkey believes that instead, "the focus should be on county success" during the next four weeks.

His statement read: "One thing I've learned during my football career is how difficult it is to juggle commitments. Top performance requires a blinkered focus on the task at hand.

"I know the honesty that is in that group of players. When they are on club duty - they will be dedicated to the club. However, asking them to switch their focus from club to All-Ireland will break their preparation chain.

"It also relinquishes an advantage that we have that might be worth a point or two come the 18th of September. Releasing players to clubs this week means that we will have to push recovery into next week, squeeze in tactical sessions and lose a week of intense training.

"I say this as a lad back looking for club success - the focus has to be on the county success.

"I firmly believe that there's still time to do the right thing for all of Mayo GAA."
