Gianni Infantino pushing for World Cups hosted by entire regions

FIFA presidential candidate Gianni Infantino is aiming to push for World Cups to be played in a whole region rather than one or two countries.

The UEFA general secretary has published his manifesto ahead of next month's election to succeed banned president Sepp Blatter.

Infantino is standing against the head of Asian football Sheikh Salman, Prince Ali of Jordan, South Africa's Tokyo Sexwale and Jerome Champagne in the February 26th election.

World Cups have always taken place in one country, except for 2002 when South Korea and Japan co-hosted the tournament.

Infantino, who was has been part of a UEFA that has decided to locate 2020 European Championship games across 13 host cities around Europe including Dublin's Aviva Stadium, wants to see a similar model for World Cups in order for less high-profile nations to have the chance to host games.

"Fifa should investigate the possibility of organising the World Cup not only in one or two countries but in a whole region, so enabling several countries to enjoy the honour and benefits of hosting the World Cup," he says.
