Glen Johnson ruled out of England squad, just days after first call-up in two years

Glen Johnson's return to international football was short-lived.

The Stoke City defender was one of Gareth Southgate's more surprising additions in the England squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia. Johnson last played for England in the 2014 World Cup against against Uruguay.

Johnson has been replaced by Burnley's Michael Keane due to injury. The 32-year-old was due to arrive at St George's Park on Tuesday as preparations begin for the back-to-back games.

Keane moved to Burnley in 2014, originally on loan from Manchester United, before the signing was made permanent the following January. The 23-year-old previously played for Ireland at underage level, before switching allegiances to his native England.

The defender has already played for England under Gareth Southgate at under-21 level. He has also been capped at under-19 and under-20 levels.
