Golden State Warriors suffer shock loss on opening night of the NBA season

Last season, the Golden State Warriors had the best-ever regular season in the history of the NBA.

73 wins from 82 games, beat the iconic Chicago Bulls record of 72-10 from the early 1990s. That was a record, many thought would never be beaten.

On the way to the NBA Finals, the Warriors won their opening 24 games, and only lost twice at home. Those losses came in their 36th and 38th home games respectively.

With the arrival of Kevin Durant in the off-season, the team were expected to be even more dominant. On Tuesday night, in their opening game of the season, the Warriors suffered a surprise heavy loss to San Antonio Spurs losing 129-100.

Durant and Stephen Curry combined to score 53 points, but the Spurs' Kawhi Leonard dominated the opening night with 35 points.

While the Warriors suffered a shock loss, Cleveland Cavaliers, the reigning NBA champions won their opening match of the season, with a 117-88 win at home to the New York Knicks.

On a night, where last year's winning team were presented with their Championship rings, the Knicks never threatened to spoil the party as Kyrie Irving led the scoring with 29 points.

In an 82-game season, the opening night is an interesting snapshot of what may happen into next year's playoffs. Despite their opposite results, both the Warriors and Cavaliers look set for a collision course in the NBA Finals.
