Good news for Mayo as Cora Staunton returns for 2017

Cora Staunton has committed to the Mayo ladies footballers for a 23rd season.

Staunton will now contribute again to the task of trying to bring an All Ireland title back to the county for the first time since 2003.

She has been involved with the senior set up since 1995, when she started off at the age of just 13.

Mayo Ladies manager Frank Browne confirmed Staunton's decision on Friday morning, along with other experienced squad members Yvonne Byrne and Martha Carter.

"They’ve been added into the Mayo 2017 WhatsApp group and all three will be training tonight," he said.

"We tried to give them as much time as possible so that they could make the right decision for themselves. All three have indicated that they will be rejoining the panel and trying to help us win the All-Ireland in 2017.

Browne added: "I’m just delighted to have them and the rest of the girls in the panel will be delighted to have them back. It’s awfully important too for the girls that had already committed before that."

Staunton is a legend of the game, having won 10 All Star awards and four All Irelands. The last All Ireland title came in 2003 however, although Mayo did reach the final in 2007.
