Graham Hunter believes that what we are seeing from Jose Mourinho is a man going through somewhat of a mid-life crisis and the Portuguese manager must now take a step back from himself and assess what he has become.
Hunter said on Off The Ball that it's "time for Jose Mourinho to take stock of his life."
"He’s a guy who looks a little bit worn down and in need of a rest, in need of a reset, and if he is completely honest a review of why there’s such a consistent burnout with him."
Hunter was close at hand when Mourinho went through a very similar fall at Real Madrid but Hunter believes there are less redeeming factors this time around, "If you’re a close Mourinho analyst, I think the pattern is getting more and more intense."
Hunter outlines the pattern and believes it is a "me, me, me culture" that is bringing him down.
While the pattern does appear to be less tactic and emotionally based, it is rooted in paranoia and Hunter thinks that his career is hitting a seriously low ebb compared to the respect and loyalty he use to get from his players earlier in his career. Hunter says, "Remember the last time he left Chelsea, everyone around in a circle, Drogba crying? It ain't happening this time."
"He created a bond. He didn't simply circle the wagons and call everyone outside the club bogeymen," which is what happened this time as everyone from the medical staff to the onlooking media and even his star players were considered people who had or were likely to betray him.
Hunter concludes that it all started happening at Real Madrid when, "his behaviour at Real Madrid stank of a mid-life crisis. He was a different man that had inspired love and loyalty at Chelsea."
