Gunnar Nelson interested in Thompson and Lawler fights

Following his impressive submission victory over Alan Jouban at UFC London two weeks ago, Gunnar Nelson admits his next aim is a bout with one of the welterweight division's top five fighters.

While he didn't go as far as calling people out, the 28-year-old said that a fight against former title contender Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson would be one the fans would want to see.

"I would love to fight Wonderboy," he told Fox Sports' Damon Martin.

"That’s a fight people seem to want to see. That’s the fight that’s most hyped up right now. A fight with him, a good win over 'Wonderboy' would be huge for my career. I would love that but as I said, I would fight any of them."

The Iceland native has won three of his last four fighters, including impressive wins over Albert Tumenov and Brandon Thatch.

Defeat against Demian Maia in late 2015 stifled his progress and an injury kept him out of his headline show in Belfast last year.

His return to the Octagon has been impressive however and his victory over Jouban showed that both his striking and submission techniques are on par with many of those at the top end of the 170lbs division.

Currently, Nelson is ranked number nine in the welterweight official rankings and is hoping to fight at least twice more this year to move into a title shot position.

"I had a good victory in my last one and I was hoping to get a top 10 [opponent] this time, but I guess it’s not bad. I got a fight. I basically wanted to step in there and fight and Alan stepped up."

He also warmed to the idea of a fight against former champion Robbie Lawler, saying: "Robbie Lawler is a big one as well. Any of them guys.

"To be honest, I understand that I could fight Robbie or 'Wonderboy' and it would skip some steps to get that money and the gold and I like that idea.

"But ultimately, I believe I will fight all those guys. In what order is not the most important thing to me."
