Half Marathon organisers apologise as course is revealed to be too short

Organisers of a half marathon in England have revealed that their course has been too short for the past three years.

In a statement released by the Brighton Half Marathon organising committee, they revealed on Friday that the course has been 146 metres short (0.09 miles) than the required distance, since 2015.

The most recent edition of the race took part in February, with professional runners, amateurs and some famous faces taking part. Brighton native Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) was one of those to compete in the event.

"We are a team of runners ourselves so we fully understand the impact of this news. We are really upset that this mistake has happened and we take full responsibility for this situation", race director Martin Harrigan revealed when the news was made public.

GPS tracking deemed the course to be shorter than the required distance of just over 21.09 kilometres.

"We can’t apologise enough for this mistake", Simon Dowe, CEO of the charity which organised the race admitted. "I know it’s hugely disappointing to everyone who trained so hard. I also know that for some, the news will be devastating as it affects race times, personal bests and records".

This is not the first time that a mistake like this has happened in the race in Brighton. In 2012, organisers revealed that the course was a third of a mile too long.
