Despite only turning 25 earlier this week, Munster fly-half Johnny Holland has been forced to retire.

A serious hamstring issue has forced the Cork native to retire on medical grounds. Last season he battled with Ian Keatley for the number ten jersey and started the crucial Pro 12 encounter against Leinster in the Aviva Stadium neat the end of the season.

Holland's only try for Munster came in that narrow loss in April, as his side lost by three points.

Holland played 11 times for his province, but looked set for a breakout season in the coming months if he stayed fit. Commenting on the decision to retire he said he didn't want to look back on his career with any sadness.

"Rugby has given me so many opportunities and I have learned so much from the experience, with fantastic memories and friends for life. I am very proud to have represented my home province, especially at the end of last season, and am thankful for the support from underage rugby all the way up."

The 25-year-old, who is a Commerce graduate from UCC is already looking ahead to his life outside rugby.

"I believe this is an exciting time for Munster Rugby and while I am hugely disappointed that my time has come to an end I look forward to supporting from the stands, and to the next chapter."
