Dana White confirms Conor McGregor won't be allowed to reign over two divisions

UFC president Dana White insists that should Conor McGregor beat Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, he will have to give up one of his belts.

McGregor aims to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts in two different weight classes concurrently, but White this week confirmed that he would not in fact reign as such.

"He'll fight and if he wins he'll hold two belts," White told UFC Tonight on FS1. "Then he'll decide which one he'll give back to me.

"He can't hold them both. He'll have accomplished this and then he'll have to figure out which one he wants to give up. He can't tie up two divisions for that long."

McGregor is the current featherweight champion and is looking to add the lightweight strap to that collection.

The situation after his UFC 202 victory over Nate Diaz was that McGregor's next fight would be Jose Aldo or he would be stripped of his featherweight title. This, of course, has not come to pass and the situation was made all the more difficult for White after Aldo requested to be released from his UFC contract.

The Brazilian was told he would get a rematch with McGregor after his defeat to the 28-year-old at UFC194 last December. However the fight has not since materialised and McGregor has already fought twice this year, at welterweight, against Nate Diaz.

McGregor now faces Alvarez on November 12 in Madison Square Garden on a card White has described as the biggest in UFC history.

The main card features three title fights including Tyron Woodley defending his welterweight crown against Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson and Karolina Kowalkiewicz's bid to dethrone women's strawweight champion Joanna JÄ™drzejczyk.
