Henrik Stenson caps off fine 2016 with European Tour Golfer of the Year accolade

Henrik Stenson has been named European Tour Golfer of 2016.

The Swede won the first major of his career with victory at The Open at Royal Troon.

That came shortly after he won the BMW International Open for the second time.

He also took home a silver medal from Rio after finishing second to Great Britain's Justin Rose in the first Olympics golf tournament for over a century.

He had been level heading into the final hole before being pipped by Rose.

He was also part of Europe's Ryder Cup team in 2016, although victory was not forthcoming.

And the 40-year-old capped his year by winning the Race to Dubai for the second time in his career.

He had previously been victorious in 2013.

Stenson is also No 4 in golf's world rankings.

Reacting to the European Tour accolade, Stenson told the tour website that it had been the best year of his career so far.

"It has certainly been the best season of my career and to now be voted the European Tour Golfer of the Year for a second time is a fantastic way to bring the curtain down on it," he said.

"To win the Claret Jug, a silver medal at the Olympics, the Race to Dubai and now this means 2016 was a very special year for me, and I am very proud of what I have achieved.

"There have been some great golfers who have won this award, and many more who just missed out over the years, so to receive it twice now is a huge honour. You can argue that my consistency was a touch higher in 2013, but in 2016 I produced my best performances at key moments, so it will go down as the best year I have had and this award is a very nice way to end it."
