Here's how much Manchester United lose if they fail to win tonight

Manchester United have a lot on the line tonight as they take on Ajax in Stockholm.

Away from the emotion of the occasion and the silverware to play for - there's also a lot of money up for grabs for both the club and individual players.

Top Table

First off there's the basic income swing between playing in the Champions League and the Europa League next year.

For example, Arsenal was estimated to have earned €53.4m for reaching the final 16 in 2015/16.

Winning the Europe League is estimated to be worth €27m for English clubs.

Here's the total prize money guaranteed once you reach the Champions League's group stages:

  • Basic allocation for each club in group stage: €12.7m.

  • Performance bonus per group win: 1.5m

  • Performance bonus per group draw: €500,000 per draw.

  • Non-distributed amounts (€500,000 per draw) are pooled and redistributed between the teams based on who has the most wins at the end of the group stage.

  • Round of 16 appearances: €6m

  • Quarter-final appearance: €6.5m

  • Semi-finalist appearance 7.5m

  • The UEFA Champions League winners can expect to receive €15.5m and the runners-up 11m, inclusive of their share of ticket revenue from the final (no additional amount will be paid to the finalists in relation to ticketing).

On top of that, an estimated 507m will be distributed across Europe's top clubs - according to the proportional value of the television market represented by the club.

In the case of the Premier League - a €140m fund was split between English clubs competing in the 2015/16 tournament. The amount earned is based on how far a club goes.

Manchester City took home almost €47m in TV money after they lost to Real Madrid at the semi-final stage.

Manchester United netted just shy of €20m from broadcasting fees - despite the fact that they failed to qualify for the knockout stages.

The club's involvement in the competition brought in a total of €38m for the club according to UEFA's official stats.

Three lines

The financial stakes are raised for the Manchester side through clauses in its record-breaking kit deal with Adidas.

The German brand's payments are linked to whether the club qualifies for Europe's flagship tournament and failure to see off Ajax this evening will lead to a 30% cut in its 2016/17 payout.

That shortfall would be worth close to £22.5m (€26m).

Motivation

To hedge against this gap in its balance sheet - the club has linked players' contracts to whether they take part in the competition.

Many of the club's marquee names have 25% of their wages tied to Champion's League qualification.

According to The Times, this total pool is worth £38m (€44m) to squad members - and bonus payouts for tonight's game are worth a total of £1m.

Bullish

Manchester United has predicted record revenues of up to £570m this fiscal year and expects a "strong finish to 2016-17 both on and off the pitch"

In a note on commercial revenue, Man United stated that "management do not expect two consecutive seasons of non-participation in the Champions League."

Ajax will play some part in next year's Champion's League regardless of tonight's outcome.

After finishing second in the Dutch league the Amsterdam club is guaranteed a place in its third qualifying round - while a win tonight will put it straight into the pool stage.
