"Heroes’ welcome" for Connacht as open-top bus parade planned for homecoming

The West is most certainly awake as Connacht continue to celebrate their victory over Leinster in the European Pro 12 Rugby final on Saturday in Murrayfield. 

Pat Lam addressed the crowd after they landed at Knock Airport in Mayo in the very early hours of Sunday morning. He informed the fans who had gathered that the 20-10 victory was for the people of the west of Ireland and the celebrations will continue through the weekend.

Galway City Council have implemented traffic restrictions and will offer Connacht players and staff a chance to show off their silverware to their loyal fans in an open-top bus parade in the city on Sunday.

They released the following statement:

“In partnership with Connacht Rugby, An Garda Siochána and Galway Fire & Rescue Service, Galway City Council are facilitating a homecoming event on Sunday afternoon through the streets of Galway City, the Capital of Connacht.

“The victorious members of the Connacht Rugby squad will make their way on an open-topped bus from outside the Town Hall Theatre in Courthouse Square, via Saint Francis Street, Eglinton Street, Williamsgate Street and on to Eyre Square North, Eyre Square East, turning on to Forster Street and then via College Road to the home of Connacht Rugby at The Sportsground where they will be a accorded a heroes’ welcome.

“Parking restrictions will be in place all along the route from early Sunday morning. An Garda Siochána and Galway City Council will implement a traffic management plan on Sunday afternoon which will include rolling closures on streets and junctions affected in the area of the bus route and in the vicinity of The Sportsground itself.

“Members of the public are requested to cooperate with An Garda Siochána, Galway City Council and Connacht Rugby stewards in ensuring a joyous yet safe occasion.

“Connacht Abú!”
