"He’s got to pull his finger out a little bit more"

Now that Romelu Lukaku is officially a Manchester United player, Jose Mourinho is set to review his attacking options ahead of the new season.

Andy Mitten from United We Stand joined Off The Ball to discuss the deal and how it will effect the futures of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

"He’s got to pull his finger out a little bit more - he’s got to do more on the defensive side of his game to appease Jose Mourinho," Andy commented, referring to Martial.

"If you were at matches last year you’d often see the manager turn and wince when he lost the ball or a dribble didn’t come off," he continued.

Mr Mitten believes that the Frenchman can still have a future at the club:

"I think he’s very talented, he’s had a lot going on in his life in the last year. He split up with his partner - the mother of his child.

"He’s gone from being the most exciting prospect, the top scorer last season, to having a pretty disappointing second season."

While he believes that Martial will remain at the club for the coming season, he added, "If he does as badly in the third and we are talking in a year's time, then it might be more realistic to talk about him going."

The football correspondent has been told by Mourinho that Rashford will remain an important player at the club as he matures.

"For the criticism that Murinho doesn’t like youth, he played him 53 times (last season). He’s a Manchester lad, he’s a United fan, he didn’t cost a penny. It’s all good - it ticks all the boxes.

"Is Rashford fully ready? I’m not convinced he is. I’d love him to be, but look at last season, he went months without scoring."
