How the Irish fared on Day 3 at Rio 2016

It was a truly mixed day for Ireland's medal hopes at Rio 2016.

The day started on a sour note for Paddy Barnes in his light flyweight opener as he lost to Spain's Samuel Carmona Heredia to end his dream of winning a medal for the third straight Olympic Games in a row.

It was a bitter blow for the Belfast boxer who cited cutting weight as a difficult part of the build-up - a point echoed by 2008 silver medallist Kenneth Egan.

Elsewhere, it was a positive start to the Games for Annalise Murphy as she won her Women's Laser Radial opener before a 14th place finish in Race 2 left her in a strong fourth place overall with more races to come.

Finn Lynch remains 21st overall in the Men's event with two races gone.

In Equestrian eventing, Ireland are in contention heading into tomorrow's showjumping after Monday's cross-country segment.

Jonty Evans is the highest place Irish performer individually so far in 16th.

Rowing also brought about a number of positives

Irish duo Claire Lambe and Sinead Lynch qualified for the semi-finals in the Women's Lightweight Sculls, with Gary and Paul O'Donovan followed that up in the men's lightweight heats.
