"I can still see it in my minds eye" - Weeshie Fogarty remembers one of football's greatest goals

Given the amount of All-Ireland finals there have been and Kerry footballers that have graced them you know that any moment that stands out does so because it was special.

We got thinking about one of those moments last week when we heard about the passing of Rathmore’s Din Joe Crowley. Chances are you’re too young to remember his wonder goal from the 1970 All-Ireland final against Meath but if you ever wanted to an example of goal perfection this was it.

Before making a name as one of Ireland's best pundits with Radio Kerry, Weeshie Fogarty was a teammate of DJ at both club and county level and he says it’s been recognised as "one of the great goals" in an All-Ireland final. "I can still see it in my minds eye" says Fogarty who remembers Crowley careering through the Meath defence soloing with his left but hitting the final shot with his right after putting off the Royals defence with his unusual style solo.

Weeshie insists that while the goal against Meath was a stand out moment it was only part of a great career. Just a year before in 1969 hew was awarded the man of the match in the All-Ireland final in a Kerry side that contained Mick O’Connell and Mick O’Dwyer.

Weeshie talked about his gregarious friend whom he said laughed a lot on the Rewind podcast.
