"I felt like this was going to be my time" - Henrik Stenson revels in maiden major win

Henrik Stenson powered his way to victory at the Open Championship this evening at Royal Troon, his sparkling final round 63 saw him beat Phil Mickelson by three strokes.

Speaking after his round, he discussed just how he was feeling heading into today and what the emotion was during his final round.

"It hasn't quite sunk in yet," he said. "I'm very happy and very proud with the way I played. It was a great match with Phil. It felt like it was going to be a two-horse race and it was all the way to the end.

"I knew he wasn't going to back down at any point and in a way that makes it easier for myself. I knew I had to keep on pushing and keep on giving myself birdie chances. He was going to give it to me so I knew I had to pull away.

"I felt like this was going to be my time. It's not something you want to run around and shout but I knew this was going to be my time. That was the extra self-belief that helped me go all the way this week."

Stenson paid tribute to his adversary during the final round and praised Mickelson's performance.

"We managed to pull away from the rest of the field and we both played some great golf. It makes it even more special to beat a competitor who has been one of the best to play the game in the last 20 years.

"To come out on top after such a fight over the past four days makes it even more special."
