David Luiz has dedicated Chelsea's Premier League victory over Manchester City to the victims of the Chapecoense club in Brazil, who were affected by an airplane crash earlier this week.
The Brazilian club were on route to the Copa Sudamericana final in Medellin, when the plane they were on crashed, claiming the lives of 19 of their players.
Speaking after the game, David Luiz declined to comment on a tackle he shipped from Sergio Aguero at the end of the game, and spoke poignantly about the friends he had at the Chapecoense club.
"I prefer to give this victory for the people dying in Brazil. It was a difficult week for us, I had some friends there and it was difficult to prepare the head for this game. Now I think, we just need to pray for the families to comfort their hearts. It's a difficult moment for everybody."
Luiz was also pictured with teammate Willian da Silva holding up a commemoration wristband at the Etihad Stadium, as a mark of respect for those affected by the tragedy.
Thousands of fans gathered at a memorial service in the Chapecoense stadium today, to honour the lives of those who died. The cause of the crash remains unclear, but, based on a recording, it is suspected that the aircraft ran out of fuel just before the crash.
